WHAT IS GYNECOMASTIA?
Gynecomastia is a breast enlargement condition that occurs in men for various reasons in general. Breast enlargement due to excessive weight gain and loss or hormonal conditions can also occur due to genetic factors. However, breast enlargement that occurs during puberty is experienced by many men. With the end of adolescence, the breasts may shrink and take on a normal appearance. In case of breast enlargement during adolescence, the request for surgery should be reviewed.
WHEN DOES GYNECOMASTIA OCCUR?
Gynecomastia is a condition that occurs most frequently in adolescence and can be observed in one out of every three men according to scientific studies. Gynecomastia, which can occur for different reasons such as hormone imbalances and drugs used, can sometimes lead to psychological problems and lack of self-confidence in men. Medical treatment is the only way to stop breast enlargement in men. If no intervention is made with regard to gynecomastia, it will not decrease or disappear on its own. For this reason, aesthetic intervention for breast enlargement in men is the only solution for gynecomastia. Considering the age range, gynecomastia is not recommended to be performed at a very young age. As a matter of fact, breast enlargement in adolescence may decrease in men in the following years.

All men who do not have an obstacle to surgery can have gynecomastia surgery. However, it is useful to wait until the end of adolescence for surgery, because the phenomenon of breast enlargement can disappear on its own after adolescence. If it doesn’t, a surgery should be performed.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF GYNECOMASTIA?
Breast enlargement in men can have many causes. Basically, the main factors of breast growth are imbalances in male or female hormones. An increase in estrogen, a female hormone, or a decrease in testosterone, a male hormone, may be among the most important causes of gynecomastia. The phenomena of breast enlargement are completely natural, and there is no different underlying condition.
HOW IS GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY PERFORMED?
The purpose of the surgery performed under general anesthesia is to remove the excess tissue in the breast and give the breast a smaller appearance. If the patient's condition allows it, liposuction can also be performed to remove excess adipose tissue. Also the excess skin is removed by applying an incision to correct the bump on the skin caused by the overdevelopment of the adipose tissue. After the contour of the thoracic wall is corrected, the operation is completed by suturing the incision spot. The same treatment is applied to both breasts and a symmetrical appearance is achieved. In some cases, the enlargement may be more in one breast. In this case, the two breasts are given the same size and a symmetrical appearance. The surgery is completed within 1 to 2 hours. Liposuction is not always used in the surgeries of our medical center. This procedure may be needed and is used in combination with gynecomastia only in case of excess fat tissue that needs to be removed. Gynecomastia surgery can also be used in the absence of a symmetrical appearance in the breasts.
HOW IS THE HEALING PROCESS AFTER GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY?
After the operation, we discharge the patient on the same day, unless it is very necessary to keep the patient at the Medical Centre. If the patient feels well, clinical rest is not required. However, it should be noted that a 1-week rest period is required at home. Therefore, it is beneficial to plan your surgery accordingly. There may be mild pain for the first few days after surgery. Using painkillers, we prevent the daily life of the patient from being affected by the surgery. Bruising and edema may occur due to the incision in the surgery. However, swelling and bruising are perfectly normal. During the first few days, the level of bruising and swelling may increase. It will then disappear on its own. Patients usually feel well enough to return to work after three or four days. However, it should be noted that a corset should be used for 1 month after the surgery. During this period, it is necessary to stay away from physical activities that force the body. At the same time, you should be careful not to receive a blow in the breast area.
WILL THERE BE ANY SCAR LEFT AFTER GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY?
In gynecomastia surgery, an incision is made in the breast area to remove excess fat tissue and excess skin. It is possible that a slight scar is left after stitching. It would be misleading to state that there will be no scars after the operation. In the first days, this scar is red in color. However, over time it takes on skin color and becomes pale. After a while, its appearance becomes extremely light. The genetic predisposition of the person is also a determining factor in how visible the scars will be after gynecomastia surgery. For example, in patients with very good skin quality, the suture scar may appear much more obscure. We can state that, in a sense, genetic factors are decisive in how distinct the stitch scar will be. The age of the patient can also become a determining factor in this regard. Of course, we cannot make a promise that the surgery will leave no scar. However, different methods are applied in the treatment of scars in our medical center.
WHEN ARE THE RESULTS OF GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY VISIBLE?
Regardless of the part of the body where the surgery is performed, a slight swelling will occur. After the gynecomastia surgery, there will definitely be a swelling in the breast area. Depending on the genetic structure, these swellings may remain for 6 months or may continue to remain for up to 1 year. These swellings will completely disappear at the end of 12 months, and thus the breast appearance obtained after the surgery will show itself with its true shape. 12 months is the maximum period of time for this. In some of our patients, the swelling may disappear completely after 5 to 6 months.
